Te Reinga Bridge will be closed at night until a full evaluation is able to be carried out.

The bridge will close to all access at 8pm every night and re-open at 7am.

Wairoa District Council chief executive Kitea Tipuna said continued rain in the Ruakituri has meant the higher than usual river levels have not receded, meaning any pressure that the receding water could place on the bridge piers has been unable to be monitored.

Te Reinga Bridge will be temporarily closed this morning following high rainfall which increased river levels and has triggered an engineering inspection.

Te Reinga Bridge will be closed to light vehicle and pedestrian traffic from 11am-midday today and is expected to be closed for 24-48 hours to enable the river levels to subside so engineers can investigate the stability of the bridge.

Mayor Relief Fund

The first distribution of the Mayoral Relief fund was made to the Ruakituri community at last week’s acknowledgement of the Te Reinga Bridge.
Mayor Craig Little took the opportunity to present the first of the Mayoral Relief Funding allocations. This $5,100 donation of supermarket vouchers was given to Ruakituri residents in recognition of the disruption and increased costs they have experienced by the closure of the bridge.
The Wairoa Mayoral Relief Fund is still open for applications. Applications to the fund will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, by Mr Little and Chairman of the Wairoa Taiwhenua Nigel How.
